July: One In, One Out

Taking part in No Spend June gave me a bit of hindsight that my spending on beauty had been a bit excessive and that really if I want to, I could get by without spending that sort of money each month. I have so many beauty products that I have opened and then ditched for a new, more exciting product. I have been looking for a way to downsize my beauty collection for a while without there being too much waste so for the month of July I decided to carry on my No Spend mentality in order to use up more products.

Since the end of June I haven't been on the strict no spend policy, instead I have implemented a one in, one out policy. When I have finished a product, I have then replaced it. I did buy one beauty treat item this month which was the Roxi x Makeup Revolution Palette which I will eventually be reviewing but I've got a lot of content I want to get written first. Other than that one palette (which was not necessary at all,) I have either replaced a product that I have finished or I have taken an item out of my over-saturated collection and started using that. Today I thought I would take you through the products I have finished and the product it has been replaced by, and whether I have purchased that item or if it has come from my collection. Thankfully doing this post has made me realise that I have gone into my beauty stash for most replacement products, showing that the system is working.

Body Creams

During June I finished a whole lot of body creams, partially because I have been tanning, partially because they were mostly half used anyway. In total I finished 5 body products so this month I picked up a couple of products from The Body Shop to replace them.

In June I used up a mini Almond Milk & Honey Body Butter, a mini Vanilla Marshmallow Body Butter, a Lush Bucks Fizz Body Conditioner and a NSpa Raspberry Body Butter and a mini Righteous Butter from Soap and Glory. After finishing all of these I had no body products left so I had to buy some more this month to keep my tan looking good.

To replace all of these body products I went to The Body Shop to pick up some of my favourite body products which is the Body Yogurt. I did swap scent this time and I went for the Cactus Blossom scent which is absolutely perfect for Summer. In addition, when I went to the Bath store, they still had the Summer Sale on and they had some of the Vanilla Marshmallow Body Butter for £7.50 so of course I had to pick some up whilst I could. I have already almost finished a tub of the Cactus Blossom Body Yogurt so I have actually bought more because I am so obsessed with this scent. If you want to find out more about the scent, here is a link to my blog post about it: The Body Shop: Cactus Blossom

If you are Bristol based they have some of the Cactus Blossom products in the Cabot Circus store.

Clarins Creams

For a while I have been using both the day and night creams from the My Clarins Set I purchased from ASOS. I really enjoyed the day cream but the night cream was where it was at. (PSA: you can currently get a sample of the night cream from Debenhams if you are a Beauty card holder.) Honestly the night cream made such a difference and has been a pleasure to use during the hot weather so I was gutted when I finished it. The day cream was nice and it was certainly hydrating and it created a nice base for makeup but I actually think I prefer the day cream I have now started using.

To replace the day cream I am now using an Estee Lauder Sample I received through A Model Recommends' Instagram. The sample is the DayWear Cream. When I picked the sample, there was a choice of 3 different types of Estee Lauder Moistursiers but this was the one I really wanted to try. I have been using the eye cream equivalent and I love it and my feelings have not changed when it comes to the day cream. I will be doing a full review of the moisturiser but for now I will say that it is lovely; it is quite a thick cream that really hydrates, creates an amazing base for makeup and it has SPF 15 which is essential for Summer.

I may have been happy to swap out the day cream but I am gutted that the night cream has ended. I haven't really replaced this with anything. I have been using the Glamglow Thristymud sample as a moisturiser to keep my skin really hydrated but on nights when this seems too much, I will use the remainder of the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Lotion which is a little bit lighter. I will definitely get through both of these soon and I will eventually buy something to replace my night creams but I will make sure there is nothing in my draw which I can use before I have to buy something.

Garnier - Eye Makeup Remover

A product that I went straight out to repurchase was the Garnier Eye Makeup Remover. I have been using this ever since I started to struggle to take my eye makeup off with just my cleanser and I have not deviated to any other eye makeup remover. This is really cheap, especially if you can get it whilst it is on offer, and it works. What more could I need?

I will continue to repurchase this but I do need to make one change. I still use cotton pads to use this product and I want to make the swap to reusable cotton pads to be a little bit more environmentally friendly. If you have a recommendation of where to get reusable cotton pads from, let me know!

MAC - Velvet Teddy

It is very rare that I will finish an entire lipstick, and it is even more rare that I would finish two tubes of the same shade but that is exactly what has happened with Velvet Teddy. Velvet Teddy was super hyped a couple of years ago, to the point where it was sold out in every MAC store I went into. The hype has died down a lot now but there is still a lot of people who love Velvet Teddy and I am certainly one of those people.

At the start of July I finished a tube of Velvet Teddy but I have been using the Victoria Beckham x Estee Lauder Nude Spice Lipstick as an alternative because it is very similar. During June I did do a Back to MAC where I swapped 6 empties for a fresh lipsticks and I did pick out Velvet Teddy as I knew mine was coming to an end. I haven't started using it yet because I am using the Victoria Beckham one but it wouldn't have felt right to not have one in my collection because it is so wearable. I would have purchased a new tube but it just happened that I could do a Back to MAC so I didn't need to. It is definitely worth saving up your MAC empties to take them Back to MAC!

Foundations

For a long time the only foundations I would use were Estee Lauder Double Wear and Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Foundation but for Drugstore Month I bought both the Maybelline Fit Me Foundation and the Revolution Conceal & Define Foundation. As I didn't want to just buy these for the blog posts I wrote, I have been using them ever since.

I really loved the Maybelline foundation, I thought it had a good colour match, the finish was matte but not cakey and it was long lasting. For a £6.99 foundation I thought it was really good. On the other hand I did not like the Revolution foundation as much and that was the foundation I left until last so I have been using this for the past couple of months and the more I have used it, the more I dislike it. I find it cakey, it is incredibly dry and I just do not like the finish, plus I bought the wrong shade. I have still been using it though and thank god it is finally over. I do have to say I would be intrigued to try the hydrating version that they are about to launch because I think I would get on with it better.

I am yet to repurchase the Estee Lauder Foundation or the Fenty Beauty foundation I love, instead I have a new product to try. This has been sat in my beauty draw for a few months and it is the IT Cosmetics CC Cream. I have been waiting to try this for such a long time and finally I have been able to try it. I have literally only just started using this but so far, so good. I will let you know how I get on with it but so far I prefer it way more than the Makeup Revolution Foundation. I'm sure I will have to buy a new foundation at some point but I will see how I get on with the CC Cream before I commit myself to anything.

Mascara

I have so many mini mascaras in my collection and I have no idea why. I have just finished the Benefit They're Real Mascara which I first used in 2014 but I haven't used it since and I was so curious to see how I got on with it 5 years later, having done my mascara trials last year. After completing my Mascara Beauty Goal I now have a more clear idea of what I want from a mascara and it turns out They're Real isn't strictly it. It is definitely an iconic mascara but for me it sat somewhere in the middle, it wasn't bad but it wasn't the best. They're Real didn't even make it to be my top Benefit Mascara, that title is still held by Roller Lash which is the mascara I have gone on to use.

I did not buy a full tube of the Roller Lash mascara, I had a sample which I received from Elle Magazine that I am using. I wanted to be able to use Roller Lash whilst the memory of They're Real was still vivid in my mind so I could write a comparison post between the two. I am currently working on this post so keep your eyes out for it. I'm sure there will be a couple more mascara posts this month as I do have a couple of miniature mascaras that I will use before I go out and buy one.

Brow Products

Brow Pencil

I assume it is the same for everyone but I get through brow pencils so quickly, I literally always feel like I am buying them. I actually ran out of my last Soap and Glory pencil during June and I panicked because I knew I couldn't buy a new one but then I remember there was a Benefit Precisely My Brow Pencil in the Birchbox x Benefit box I purchased in May. Thank god I bought the box because it gave me the They're Real Mascara and the Brow Pencil and without them I would have struggled through June.

I hadn't actually tried the Precisely My Brow Pencil before but it is the exact type of brow pencil I like. I like the thin nib pencils because I find them easier to use to fill in your brows more naturally. This was a really good pencil but the amount I got was tiny and I literally used it up in about 2 weeks and close to the end of the pencil it snapped so I had to replace it.

I did think about buying the Benefit pencil but I am trying to cut down on spending and normally I wouldn't buy the Benefit one, I normally buy the Soap and Glory one which is pretty much the same. The Soap and Glory brow products were on 3 for 2 and I already needed a brow gel so I picked the brow gel but I really struggled with the pencils. I normally get the thin pencil which has a spoolie on the other end but each box I picked up in my local store was empty; people had stolen them, or they had been used. I managed to find one pencil which had not been used or stolen so I picked that up but it was 3 for 2.

In the end I purchased one of the pencils which has the felt tip on the end. I actually really like the felt tip end because it does create more hair-like strokes but the pencil is a little bit too thick for my liking. I have been using this one first and then I have my preferred pencil as a back up. Thankfully I won't be buying brow pencils for a while now.

Brow Gel

The final product is of course, brow gel. Much like most of the other products, I was running out of brow gel before I even started No Spend June but I have forced it to live on so I didn't have to buy another one. By the end, the gel was basically putting no product on my brows so it was definitely time for a new one. Much like the eye makeup remover, I did a straight swap so I was using the Soap and Glory Volu-Boost Brow Gel and I repurchased it.

I do prefer Gimme Brow from Benefit but once again, I am not made of money so I thought I would stick with the cheaper option. This is still a good product but a lot more product does come on the wand so you have to be careful not to apply too much product because you can quickly go overboard. This will last a long time so I know I won't have to purchase another one for a while now.

I have not used up as many products as I did in June but this was not a month to try and finish products, it was a month to cut down on my beauty spending. As you will find out in my post on Thursday, I will be sticking to my One in, One out policy for the rest of the year but I will permit myself one treat beauty item a month so I have to make sure that one item is worthy.

I will try to write one of these posts each month to keep you updated with my progress and I will be honest if I have broken my rules. If you want, you should do a beauty spend cut down with me, I would love to know how you get on and I want updates!
