The College of Engineering, Trivandrum


The College of Engineering, Trivandrum commonly referred to as CET, is located at Kulathoor (nearby Sreekariyam), Trivandrum. Established as the 1st Engineering College in the year 1939, the College of Engineering, Trivandrum has since then proved its eminence as one of the most leading Engineering College not just in Kerala but also in India.


Started on 3rd July 1939 as a part of the erstwhile Travancore University, the College of Engineering, Trivandrum, is currently the top most leading engineering college in Kerala. This college, which is under the direct administration of the Kerala Government, extends over 125 acres with the most spacious campus. A 
Britisher, namely, Maj T.H. Mathewman, was the 1st Principal of College of Engineering, Trivandrum. The establishment is highly indebted to the then Tranvancore Maharaja, Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma for its foundation.

The college initially had an intake of around 21 students each for Diploma as well as Degree courses in Electrical, Mechanical and Civil branches. With time, this count increased to about 3500 students, teaching staff of around 280 in numbers and non-teaching staff count of 270. Currently CET has 8 fully-fledged departments providing 18 doctoral and postgraduate as well as 8 undergraduate programmes under Kerala University.

Facilities in College of Engineering
The college has a vast library, co-operative society and a central computer facility serving the requirements of students as well as the staff. CET has a spacious Men’s and Women’s hostel inside the campus. There are seven college buses for both staffs and students operating in different routes. There is a college canteen which functions under a committee which has representatives from teachers, students, non-teaching staffs and PTA. There is a post office inside the campus and an SBT branch functioning in front of the college campus.
Various other facilities such as Environmental Club, Entrepreneurship club, National Service Scheme, Fitness centre, etc are also available at CET. Other student organizations present are Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), IEEE student branch, Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), RoboCET, etc. Inorder to enhance the skills of the students several educational programs like Industry Institution Interaction Cell (III) and centre for training in software engineering are also offered by CET.

Highlighting feature - Career Guidance and Placement Unit (CGPU) in College of Engineering
The Career Guidance and Placement Unit (CGPU) of the College of Engineering, Trivandrum is an organization with the main objective of placing students in prominent corporate organizations by means of campus recruitment. It also aims at providing help and information regarding job opportunities, higher education and competitive exams.

Some of the leading corporate giants that have regularly visited the CET campus are IBM, TCS, HCL, VERIZON, Wipro, KANBAY, Infosys, CTS, L&T Info, Mahindra British Telecom, Blue Star, Hindustan Motors, Asok Leylan, BPL Communications, US Software, Mindtree, Silicon Automation, Planetasia, BPL Ltd., etc

Admission in College of Engineering
College of Engineering, Trivandrum admits students strictly based on their performance in the entrance exams. Inorder to get an admission for any Undergraduate programmes, the student has to score in the Kerala Engineering Entrance Examination (KEAM). For Postgraduate programmes, the scores of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) have to be high. MBA admission can be achieved by scoring in Management Attitude Test (MAT) and MCA admission through Kerala MCA Entrance Examination.

The College of Engineering, Trivandrum was listed amongst the top 10 Engineering Colleges according to a study conducted by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India in the year 1990. The college, having maintained excellence in both curricular and   academic activities, has gained reputation as the most sought after certified Engineering College in Kerala.
