Completing a set through TCDB trades

Two years ago on my flagship blog The Collector I posted about the Score Franchise insert sets. These cards are always on my radar though I never prioritized completing the set. Until now..

Through a trade with TCDB member SandyRusty I was able to acquire this Darren Daulton Franchise single - one of the more affordable in the set. "Dutch" would lead the Phillies to the NL pennant that year, giving this card some added significance. I now have 10 of the 28 cards in the 1993 Score Franchise set - which is double the amount of cards I have from the 1993 Score base set. Franchise has been added to my 1993 Wantlist.

Meanwhile, 1993-94 Fleer Ultra basketball has been removed from my 1993 wantlist. SandyRusty had the two remaining cards I needed, including the Michael Jordan base card that I technically didn't need (but didn't want to crack out of its graded case if I could avoid doing so.) Unlike 1992-93 Ultra Basketball or 1993 Ultra Baseball, I didn't buy a box of '93-94. Nearly the entire 375-card set  was assembled through trades and blogger gifts. I probably purchased less than 10% of the singles myself.

There were other 1993-issued cards included in this trade. Whenever I make a cross-border trade I try to pick up cards that were only issued in Canada, such as this McDonald's Great Moments single of another All-Time Team backstop, Ernie Whitt. This is a splendid upgrade from a dull 1990 Donruss place holder.

The "Unbelievable Comeback" refers to a 10-0 deficit the Jays overcame against the Red Sox in 1989. Whitt's 9th-inning grand slam off future Hall of Famer Lee Smith forced extra frames. Toronto would go on to beat Boston 13-11 in 12 innings.

Now for the non-1993 portion of the trade. Here's another All-Time Team Frankenset filler:

Nothing like a vintage O-Pee-Chee card of a Canadian-born All-Star.

The rest of the trade includes a 1987 Topps LT, a 1977 Topps Al Hrabosky (which Bruno informed me was creased/gum stained before sending), a Bret Saberhagen Fleer RC, and a throw-in to compensate for the "Mad Hungarian" - two SP Authentic singles of point guards that were traded for each other.

One more card that might have been issued in 1993:

This is a "Centennial Collector's Series" team card of the 1983-84 Edmonton Oilers, issued by High Liner in 1992-93. Loads of Hall of Famers in this photo, including Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier (second row center) and Grant Fuhr (front row, far right.) Later in 1984 the Oilers would hire a young man with Down Syndrome as a clubhouse attendant.

Joey Moss was a fixture with the franchise for 36 years, often singing the Canadian National anthem on the bench or on the ice. One of the longest-tenured members of the Oilers, Moss passed away Monday at age 57.

Rest in peace, Joey.

Thanks for reading!
